PLP Reflection

Genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and discourse community. These were all foreign terms to be before beginning this course. Of course, I knew the words, but not how they relate to communication.

Rhetorical situation was probably the one concept that was most strange. But when you break it down to writer, audience, message, and purpose. It seems very easy from that point on.

Discourse community is another interesting concept. We all belong to so many of them and do not even realize it.

Over all, learning about these different terms, has helped me in my daily communications, both at home and at work.

  1. Hi Julie,
I also discussed Discourse Communities. It is great how you break that down with the idea that we do not really realize how many we are each a part of. I had previously tied this to just my training team and did not think about the groups that I interact with daily. That is actually different discourse communities and will need to have different purpose and genre because they are a different audience. I also will say they both have different knowledge and skill sets. I am glad the understanding of the terms has helped you daily and good luck with your PLP. Thanks for the post.

  2. Rhetorical situation was also the concept that resonated most with me as well. Once you understand it, I think it really helps you write more meaningful and purposeful content.
